Grandma's Visit

Well, it's been a great past few weeks with Andrew's mom here with us. We were able to get outside quite a lot, despite the crazy shifts in weather we've been having. The kids got in their fair share of hide and seek, Sequence, book reading, and just overall having more attention than they're used to with an extra set of hands around. She took both Ella and Peter out to lunch on their own while she was here. They got to bake cinnamon rolls for Peter's birthday, and make pizza too. We took a trip to Reptiland on Saturday, which was a nice time as well. I was able to attend meetings, singing practice, and have a nice night out with Andrew all while knowing our kids were in good care. I'm telling you, someday we will live by family. There's nothing like having those you love and trust watch over your kids and spend time making memories with. I think she's probably going to go back to Oregon and spend a few days recovering from all the constant activity! We sure have enjoyed her stay and we are looking forward to other family coming later this month, in June as well, then our trip to Alaska in July, and another visit from Andrew's parents before school starts up again. I feel like summer is going to fly by with all we have to look forward to. It's a good thing too, because it takes me a while to get back into the swing of things not having an adult to talk to during the day at home, and someone to give me peace of mind while I'm showering since they're hanging out with the kids. Ella told me tonight that she's going to be bored when Grandma leaves. I'm now under pressure to get my hide and seek on.

Thank you for coming! You will be missed by all of us!

oh yeah. and she got me watching Downton Abbey. that's what i'll be doing this week.

Ahoy! Pirate Peter is 4!

We started a new tradition last year with Ella and John, where at some meal during the day of their birthday, they get a special candle and a song just for them. Ella and Peter got it for breakfast, John had his at dinner last time, but I think we're going to stick with cinnamon rolls with candles in them. As you can see, Peter is super excited about being 4 years old. I, on the other hand cannot figure out how this is all happening so fast, but I'm happy for him too. We asked my nephew if being 4 meant that you stop throwing fits and he just laughed. I'm guessing I might have a few more years of dealing with that, but oh well. It could be worse. Peter had a lot of fun the day of his birthday. He got to play pirates with everyone while I made his cake, play games and playdoh too. Grandma Barb was a huge help and I'm sure I would have been a frazzled mess by the time of the party if she hadn't been here. Andrew got off work just in time to pick up pizzas on the way home and everything went really well. The party was great and I even got into it. I put rolled up my ratty jeans, put on my burlap TOMS, wore my red striped shirt, put in my nose ring, and donned a headband with an eye patch. It was a great excuse to be silly. The kids each had a patch and a headband that I cut out of pirate fabric. We made pirate sticker cards and had pirate treat bags in our treasure box. There was an attempt to get all the kids in the picture, which is always a challenge, but hey, it worked better than all those skeptical dads thought :).
Thank you Bubba, for picking a fun idea for a party, even though, as we said with a sign on our door, the party was for fun pirates, we do not condone the actions of real pirates. :)

The cake was an idea I found on Parenting Magazine's website. It was much harder to frost than I thought, so if you make it for your own party, freeze the ship after it's cut for a few minutes before you frost it. The crumbly side of the cake won't rub off with the frosting. It was awesome once it was done though, I made my little 4 year old one happy boy. He's till talking about it.

My little Pirate and I.
Love you Bubski.

The little things...

I know for the grandparent's sake, and my own lack of memory, I had been pretty good at updating different things the kids were up to, and lately I've not been so good about recording their individual traits. The other night I took a picture of each of them sleeping, just because I love to do that and since they are currently all napping, I will take this time to fill in those who want to know.

Little John Lew, is what we still call him sometimes, though he is not so little anymore. In fact just today I strained my back to the point of being on the floor in pain after lifting him up. I'm okay. I just need to remember he's almost 30 pounds and not a baby anymore. He's very much the character I thought he might grow into. He loves to laugh and be laughed at. He has been talking now for so long that his sentences surprise me sometimes. "Mama, can I have the snack from the cubberator?" Is one of my newest favorite questions. Cupboard and Refridgerator in the same word. He is trying his own will these days as he likes to tell me NO and then when I give him the look he regrets it and says, "Okay Mama, I do it." Not every time, but he's for sure the quickest to listen for fear of punishment. He loves to play ball, and is athletic to the core. He throws right to me almost every time. He plays "Bak-set-ball" and yells, "Shoot da hoop!" When he makes a basket. He recently went on a bike ride where Andrew's steering handle was broken and he had to try and teach John how to steer the bike himself and John ran Andrew into all manner of things back and forth across the sidewalk. I could not stop laughing. He loves to be held and tickled. Books are still tricky unless they're short and he really wants to pay attention. He loves to be around Ella's school friends when I take him in to drop her off. He sings songs in his car seat and asks, "Mama, did you hear dat?" He still thinks it's funny to cover his head with his blanket and have me pretend I have no idea where he is. He is a great sleeper, always has been. He makes my heart fill with joy when every once in a while he will say without prompting, "I wuv you Mama." Nothing better than that.

Peter boy is still the most energetic of the three of my kids. You wouldn't know it by how precious he is while sleeping, but he is the one who could cause me to need medication some days. The thing about Peter, is that when he wants to be, he is the most sweet, loving, caring little boy. It is what makes up for the times when he literally throws himself on the floor and screams about something that he's mad about. It could be as simple as a snack mishap. Those times are getting fewer as he's getting older, but he's also a lot harder to lift off the floor when he's down there. I think the phrase that comes to my mind is "Anger Management." He lacks it in a bad way. But then again, so do I sometimes. He loves dinosaurs, cars, planes, helicopters, and farm animals. He rolls his tractors all over the kitchen floor and keeps all fire trucks in their collective cubbies and other things sorted as well. He's witty and funny. When we visit Ella's class for parties, her teachers laugh at everything he does, but I tell them, "You think it's funny now, just wait till he's in your class next fall, " Then I am the one chuckling. :) Ella's classmates yell, "Hi Peter! Bye Peter! Have a good day Peter!" when we come and go. He loves attention. He has an ear piercing yell when he's excited and most of the time just literally yells, "AH HA HA HA!!" We found out on our last trip to CA that he's a natural little golfer. Makes sense to me as his baseball skills fall short causing frustration for all. He loves to swing. He wakes slowly. He wakes early. Usually coming into my room and snuggling real close, wiggling all over then asking, "Can I watch a show on your phone?" Some days, yes, some days, no. He's a good eater, but does not like broccoli. Peter thrives on incentives. Do this...and you can have....Done. He can't wait to turn 4 in a few weeks and he is super excited for preschool. I know I'm going to cry on his first day. His action keeps me busy, but it also keeps me company.

Our Ella girl. I can't believe she's going to kindergarden in less than 5 months. She is so excited. Preschool is treating her wonderfully and I am so amazed at all she is learning. Her coloring and drawing abilities have just awed me lately. She loves to "write orders" like waitresses do and bring me back trays of food and chai tea. She and Peter talk about going up to their room to "chat" sometimes. She cares about her clothes and shoes which sometimes makes me crazy, but I have to remind myself exactly who she gets that from.  It's not her dad. She loves to run and she's fast too. Her strong will lately could send us in circles of yes's and why's and whatnot, but she's learning that no matter how old she is, she still has to obey. The other night I made the kids say, "Children obey your parents in the Lord, " ten times before we could get out of the car for AWANA. By the tenth time, Ella was cracking up, but she hasn't forgotten her verse or what it means either. She loves to help me. Today she spread the peanut butter for the sandwiches, which was messy, but she's learning. Baking with me is one of her favorites. She talks all the time about "girl time" when her and I  leave the boys home with Daddy and go do errands. She moved back into the boys' bedroom into a toddler bed again just because she didn't want to sleep alone. "The boys have each other and I have no one, " was what put us over the edge to let her go back in there after 2 weeks of camping on their floor in her sleeping bag. She still says funny things like, "Poodle, Toodle, and Stoodle," for pool, tool, and stool. "Nilla wipers" are Nilla Wafers. "Our chudders, " is what she means for each other. I don't correct her, I think its great. She loves to dance and sing. She's sensitive to others and is just sensitive herself. She doesn't like to be in trouble, but does her share of fighting with the boys. She recently got a new bike that is purple and girly. That's a first for her. Garage sale boy bikes are what she had before. She wants to grow her hair super long like Rapunzel and Peter tells her "You will not let your hair drag on this floor!" and they fight about it. Her hair is growing pretty well though and she loves when I use conditioner, like it's something great and special, so I treat it like that. She tells me it makes her bath smell like Junior Mints. HA! We are doing half day Kindergarden with her next year because I just don't want her gone all day. Call me attached, controlling, whatever, but I just need one more year with her  home at lunch and naps. I will miss it too much when I don't see her all day.

There you have it. My three monkeys. Well, actually, the other night after AWANA, all the kids said they were hungry. I said, "Well, then you can each have a banana." Peter quickly said back to me, "Mom, monkeys eat bananas." Exactly, I said.

Easter Pics

Easter was a nice day for us. We woke up early, went to church, and had a nice meal there, and afterward. Then after every member of our household took a nap, we just relaxed, played outside, and enjoyed our afternoon. I made halibut burritos for dinner and we had pie and ice cream for dessert. I did not make the pie, Marie Calendar did. I wanted it to be a quiet day, and it was. We read the Easter story and put the kids to bed. Success for all.

We were one of the last tables called for breakfast, so we passed the time by being silly and Peter invented "fork" fighting with his friend at the table.

My friend Abbey and I.

Ella had seen this skirt in a magazine and asked me, "Mom, how do I get that skirt?" The answer. Ask Gramma Paula. :) No, really, she did ask her and my mom got her outfit and the boys' shirts. I really enjoy Boden magazine. Glad to know my daughter does too :).

John had enough trying to stay awake for the last 4 minutes home. He was just flat passed out and I put him right in his bed.

Easter buckets had jelly beans, a watch for the boys, a purse for Ella, and the pajamas you see below. The jelly beans made the shape of a carrot and Peter keeps telling people that we gave them carrot jellybeans. I have had to explain this every time. They're tangerine...one of the best flavors if you ask my husband.

"Pasture Bedtime" jammies! Mine says Mother Hen. Andrew had to hear me say it a few times and then he laughed and said, "I just got it. Past your bedtime." Uh yeah. I wished they came in daddy size.

Ready for bed!

Maybe next year I will get my act together and make a big meal and carry out some of those projects I saw online and take lots of pictures, but who knows. This was "easy peezy lemon squeezy" as Ella would say and a nice day with the family. Probably also the first day in my motherhood that I forgot to bring my actual camera with me on a holiday. Thank goodness for cell phones with them! Hope your Easter was blessed.

Easter Decor, Flowers, and one more Sweet Treat

This is my current mantle. I got the picture as a free print out off Pinterest and used a white frame I already had. The egg cups were a gift from my mother in law, the eggs inside them are from TJ Maxx. The egg glass picture is from The English Garden a few years ago, and the branches are off our grapevine out back with little ornaments I found for 25 cents at a garage sale last year. Tonight as we were going to bed, Ella asked me if while they were sleeping, I was going to make a "Happy Easter" banner. I told her probably next year.

These little vintage egg flower things are from a garage sale last year. This is my kitchen sink window.

These little spring chicks are also garage sale finds. Hand painted by a cute elderly lady, I couldn't resist after she told me she painted them herself. My replacement owl, from Target, since the last one bit the stove top via a super bouncy sky ball. And a flower from the neighbors garden that she gave me.

We were at the home of one of Andrew's co-workers last night and he just had all kinds of lovely stuff growing in the back yard. I pulled out my phone and started taking pictures simply because I am so glad to see color right before Easter. This spring has been just beautiful here.

Last but not least, I decided to make more sweets. HA! I love rice krispy treats and instead of pressing them onto a pan and cutting squares, I rolled them in balls, and pressed them into a muffin tin and made nests! Ella helped me put the eggs in and I think we are going to take them to church tomorrow to share. Having these, along with the rest of the chocolate eggs in my house is just asking for trouble.

We are excited for Easter tomorrow.
All three kids know about finding their baskets in the morning and know that they can't have them until their outfits are on and they are ready to go. We are waking them up at an awful hour to make it to the Sonrise service at 6:30am. Last year, it was a great message and they provide a hearty breakfast afterward. Andrew and I just kept stuff simple this year. They have a few things for their baskets, which are actually tin buckets, and we are having a relaxed day together. These past few weeks have been very busy and we are all ready for some down time. It's really what we should strive to do on the weekends, but we tend to fill them up and go go go. Tonight I set out all of the kids' outfits, then picked out mine. SInce I didn't shop for Easter clothes, I pulled out something I hadn't worn and made an ensemble. The littles interrupted me more than once and asked questions about my choices. Ella finally approved and I sent them all back to bed. Then, as I was coming upstairs, Andrew asked, "Can you please pick out something for me to wear too?" So I guess I'd better do that and get to bed. Early day on the horizon!

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter with family or friends and take time to remember how much you are loved by God.

Easter Treats

This week has been a fun one with Easter related activities for the kids. On Wednesday, Ella had her Egg Hunt for her school classroom. I had signed up to bring cookies and nearly forgot until the day before. At least I had remembered to get the supplies last time I was at Target. As in, a can of frosting, sprinkles, and sugar cookie mix in a bag. No, I don't claim to be Martha Stewart. Cookies from a bag are a hit in this family. I do, on occasion pull out half the ingredients in my cupboard and make them from scratch, but not the day before they're supposed to be demolished by preschoolers. And they were. Not a single one left. Thank you Betty Crocker for making me look good.

Ella found so many eggs before I could even get the boys their 2, so I didn't get a picture of her in action, but here she is with her bucket full. It was bright outside and apparently Ella has sensitive eyes. When they tried to get a shot of the whole class, she kept putting her sleeve up. I said, "Ella put your hand down, " and she started crying and got out of the picture telling me, "It's too bright and I can't keep my eyes open." Well, I will say, there was a shady spot that we could have gathered the 16 squinting egg hunters, but the teachers didn't see that, oh well. Next time I will remember the sunglasses.

The next day, we made plans with friends to make chocolate eggs. Now, anything chocolate and homemade is usually a hit with all of us. We drove out to their house, the same ones we made donuts with in February, and went to work. It's not easy trying to do things like this when there are 6 toddlers and a baby, but we did it. Between time outs, soap in the mouth for potty words (Peter), lunch, and the Daddies finally getting home and taking them outside, the three moms managed to get over 6 dozen eggs made, dipped, and cooled. YAY US. I had fun and so did the kids. Now, I'm having to exercise self control with the container of them sitting in my fridge.

Here's the recipe.
4c Powdered Sugar
1/4 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla (they had pure vanilla bean paste and it made them so tasty)
1/4 cup butter
1 tsp salt
Cream butter, add salt and vanilla, beat well, add sugar and make smooth then add milk. Add peanut butter or coconut to taste. Form into egg shape and cover with chocolate. For the crispy ones, we did the peanut butter recipe and just added rice krispies at the end with a spoon.
We put the creamy goodness in the fridge before making them into egg shapes. You can also make these and just do little balls for other occasions too. I'm just sayin' the more reasons you have to make these, the better.

coconut cream

After you make the egg shapes, it's easier to dip them if you put them back in the fridge and let them harden so they don't fall apart in the melted chocolate.
For the melted chocolate, we used chocolate chips (milk and dark) and a little vegetable oil melted in a double boiler. Put the egg in the chocolate, and lift out with a fork so the extra drips down and put on the wax paper. Then return them to either the fridge or freezer before you put them in containers.

The kids loved them.
John was very concerned about the amount of chocolate melting all over his fingers, but he didn't complain about licking it off either.

Happy Egging Everyone!
